I loved the movie the Bucket List. It made me stop and give some thought to the things that I would like to do and see and achieve before I kick the bucket. But why is it we stop, give some thought to things like this, put the list away and move on doing the same thing we were already doing, and complaining about the same things. Often we blame not having enough money to do the things we want, but maybe its just not having enough drive to want these things badly enough.
I read a quote from the Dalai Lama last week and would like to share it with you, because it was something that hit home with me.
The Dalai Lama was asked what surprised him most, he said:
“Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”
Are you wasting your living days doing things that you really don’t like that much. Are you in a job that doesn’t make you happy, or a relationship with someone you really don’t love. Are you doing something or being with someone because it just passes time? Is this really what living is meant to be about?
Maybe its time for us all to do a mental check of our lives and what we really want out of them. Of course it is never as simple as quitting a job and trekking your way around the world. But maybe it is time to start ticking some boxes off on that bucket list, or starting to work towards something on the list. Make changes to take you out of auto pilot mode. Take a risk and be happy. Find the joy in your life. Spend time with the people you love. Don’t wait until it is too late.
Just to have a little laugh, here is the trailer for The Bucket List. For those that haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. And don’t be surprised if you shed a tear.
